Creative minority, Kim Jung Wook. Although known as a documentary filmmaker and graphics designer, he is most renowned for accomplishing a highly unusual feat: traveling round Korean waters on a 24-foot sailboat. After graduating from college with a bachelor's degree in graphics design, he entered iMBC, only to leave the company in pursuit of a free culture creating lifestyle. He does not want to limit his life to a single career path. Rather, he seeks to carve out a colorful identity through a wide range of commitments and experiences. He believes that time spent on waters without a definite purpose is not time wasted. He assumes what might seem like an unconventional stance by urging people to simply be themselves and live their own lives, even if doing so might be perceived by others as failures. His dedication to yachting, surfing, and other unique commitments has garnered media interest and opened up a staggering variety of opportunities including holding an exhibition, giving lectures, appearing on TV, planning and directing documentary films, and designing equipment and supplies for Busan Cup Women's Match Race.

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED2011, “The Rediscovery of Wonder,” will be held February 28-March 4, 2011, in Long Beach, California, with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs, California. TEDx는 TED의 기조 ‘퍼뜨릴만한 가치가 있는 생각’을 더 많은 사람들에게 알리고자 지역사회, 비영리단체 등이 TED로부터 라이선스를 받아 지역에서 여는 TED 행사를 뜻합니다. 현재 한국에서 TEDx는 TEDxMyungdong을 시작으로 TEDxDaejeon, TEDxSeoul, TEDxHangang, TEDxYonsei, 등이 개최된 바 있으며 점점 그 수가 늘어나고 있는 추세입니다.
What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxSinchon, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxSinchon event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
언제 부터 였을까. 인터넷의 메일이 소통 수단으로서 즐기지 않는 연락 매체가 된건.
동의를 딱히 하지도 않았는데 무한정 도착하는 광고 메일들을 일일히 지워 내는 것은 꽤나 성가신 일이 되어버려서, 메신저나 핸드폰으로 연락을 요구하고, 회신한다. 나에게 이메일 서비스란 택배 서비와 마찬가지로, 받을 물품이 없는 한, 습관적으로 확인하는 경우는 잘 없다. 여느때 처럼 스팸 메일함을 비우려고 하다가 내 이름이 적힌 두통의 이메일의 제목을 보았고, 열어 보았더니 TEDxSinchon으로 부터 온 연락이었다. 메일 주소가 포털 사이트의 계정이 아닌 비주류 주소였기 때문에 자동으로 스팸 메일 함으로 옮겨 진 듯 하다.
메일의 내용은 '성공적인 실패' 라는 성공이라고는 결코 볼 수 없는(성공적인 실패라고 한들 실패를 수식하는 성공이 있을뿐, 궁극적으로 실패 이니까) 주제에 관하여 연사로 초대 받았는데, 내가 두번의 이메일을 확인하지 않자 세번째의 이메일 에는 '혹시 아직 검토중이시라면 부디 긍정적으로 검토 부탁드리며' 라는 문구가 있었다. '성공적인 실패' 라니 내 삶에 한번도 없었던 수식 이었다.
TED의 영상은 이미 즐겨 봐왔던 탓에, TEDx관련 행사에 연사로 초대 받는 다는 것은 굉장한 영광 이었지만, 다소 의아한 주제에 대해 내가 무엇을 말할 수 있을 것인지 고민을 해봐도, 쉽사리 정리가 되지 않았지만, 연설 제안을 승낙 하기로 했다. 연설을 위해 생각을 정리하다 보면 어느정도 실패와 성공에 대한 기준도 잡히고, 스스로의 사고의 폭이 확장 될 테니까. 처음에는 '나는 결코 실패하지 않았다' 식으로의 합리화를 준비했다. 남들 다 나온 대학도 나왔지만, 딱히 성공이라고 할 만한 수식을 얻어본 적이 없었으니까. 강하진 않지만 일종의 패배의식을 가지고 생각의 정리를 시작했다. 수학의 정석의 각 단원에 나오는 공식을 바탕으로 작년에 달링 갤러리에서 전시를 했던 기억을 되찾아, 실패에 관한 분석을 했다. 벤다이어 그램으로 실패와 성공을 나누고, 명제로 실패와 성공의 역,이,대우를 대입해 명제가 성립될 수 없음을 증명하고 사칙연산을 동원해 공식화 시키다가 든 생각. '너무 어거지로 합리화를 하고 있잖아?'
TEDxSinchon 입장으로 생각 해 보면, 그들이 벤다이어 그램, 명제와 사칙연산으로 어거지 공식을 만들어 실패의 누명에서 벗어나는 내 모습을 기대해 나를 초대하지는 않았을 것이다. 그 사실을 깨닫게 된건, 행사를 하루 앞둔 1월 28일 저녁. 외웠던 말들을 애써 잊으려고 하며, 완전히 솔직한 이야기만 하는 편이 나를위해서도 나을 것 같다는 결론에 다다랐다. 왜 중요한 일은 큰 일을 하기 직전에 꼭 일어 나는지, 그래도 전면 수정을 해도 군소리 없이 따라주는 내 손과 머리가 자랑스럽다.
4~50명 앞에서는 수업해 본 적이 있지만, 150명 앞에서 강연을 해본 적이 없는 나는, 어렸을 적에도 웅변학원 근처에도 못가봤다. 밤을 새고 지친 상태로 연설하면 졸린 느낌에 취해 잘 하겠지 라고 생각했는데, 막상 나를 지켜보는 많은 사람들의 강한 시선에 압도되어 말을 제대로 하지 못했다. 말은 버벅거리고 머릿속에는 몇번이나 블루스크린이 떴다. 좋은 경험 이었지만 조리있게 말하지 못한 것 같아 스스로 느끼기엔 많은 사람 앞에서 보기좋게 망신을 당한 느낌이기도 했다. 하지만 대부분의 일은 하지 않는 것 보다 하는 편이 낫다. 누군가 권해준 일이라면 더더욱. 이 강연이 실패로 비춰졌는가 성공으로 비춰졌는 가는 중요치 않다. 중요한 점은 내가 바로, 실천했다는 점이다.
